CCGA Resources Provide Plants to Over 100 Gardens!
According to Windy City Harvest our growing season here is 204 days long and to help get things going our CCGA Resources Team grew 8000 vegetable starts, herbs, and ornamentals in its two greenhouses which were distributed to over 100 community gardens on Saturday May 11th at The Hatchery. The line was long at times and it felt more like late winter than late spring but gardeners left with a curated selection of flowers and vegetables and as many seedlings as they could carry away from the large herb table. From several varieties of thyme, basil and oregano to hyssop, talinum, statice, etc…the scope of herbs was impressive and no city that we know of has an all volunteer organization that grows the variety of plants on the scale of CCGA for community gardens.
We sincerely thank the volunteers of CCGA who have been tirelessly making the greenhouse rounds and nurturing all those beautiful plants that are now in gardens all over the city. A big thank you as well to Christy Webber for lending Resources a big truck to move our plants and to Matthew Frazel from UIC for the veggie starts he grew to add to the Big Spring Distribution (including quinoa!).
